May 2022 report20 Jun 2022

On 23 May 2022, the ACCC finalised a report to the Treasurer as part of its inquiry into the prices, profits and margins in the supply of electricity in the National Electricity Market (NEM).

Since the report was finalised, there has been a substantial shift in Australian energy markets. We prepared an addendum to the report to explain the drivers of the unprecedented changes, the price impacts we are seeing, and the ACCC's role.

The ACCC published the report and addendum on 20 June 2022.

The report presents an analysis of electricity retailers’ billing data and the electricity prices faced by customers in Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, and south-east Queensland up to quarter 3 2021. These are the regions of the National Electricity Market with effective competition in retail markets.

The report extends our analysis of retailers’ billing data, which was most recently presented in our May 2021 report. The report complements our work on retailers’ costs of supplying electricity, which was most recently presented in our November 2021 report.
