What the ACCC does

  • We track and report on the prices, costs and profits of domestic airline passenger services.
  • We track and report on the prices, costs and profits of services at major Australian airports.
  • We assess proposed price increases from Sydney Airport for regional air services and from Airservices Australia.

What the ACCC can't do

  • We don’t regulate airports, airlines or airfares.
  • We don’t resolve individual complaints about delayed or cancelled flights.

Rules and advice for business and consumers

The basic consumer rights known as consumer guarantees apply to flights, including the guarantee that services are provided within a reasonable time.

Industry reporting and monitoring

We assess notifications of proposed price increases from Sydney Airport in relation to regional air services, and from Airservices Australia for air traffic control, and aviation fire-fighting and rescue services.
The ACCC tracks prices, costs, profits and quality of aeronautical, car parking and landside access services at Australia’s major airports. We report each year to the Treasurer.

Infrastructure consultative committee

The Infrastructure Consultative Committee was set up in 2006 to facilitate discussions on the broad issues of infrastructure and infrastructure regulation.

ACCC action on travel and airports

The ACCC has denied Virgin Australia Airlines and Alliance Aviation Services’ (ASX:AQZ) application for re-authorisation of their agreement to coordinate and jointly tender for and supply services to corporate customers, mainly for fly-in fly-out employees.
