What the ACCC does

  • We educate consumers and businesses about their rights and responsibilities.
  • We accept reports where people consider a business is doing something it shouldn’t do. We use those reports to inform our education, compliance and enforcement work.
  • If a business breaks the rules about selling cars, we can investigate and may take some form of compliance or enforcement action. See our compliance and enforcement policy and priorities.

What the ACCC can't do

  • We don’t review sales agreements for cars.
  • We don't resolve individual disputes about cars.

Rules and advice for business and consumers

New caravans

Under Australian law, products and services that consumers buy come with automatic guarantees that they will work and do what they’re supposed to do. Consumer guarantees apply to caravans and other recreational vehicles.

The Motor Vehicle Information Scheme increases competition and choice for consumers about where they have their cars serviced and repaired. It came into effect on 1 July 2022.

Grays in court over misleading descriptions of cars for sale online

The ACCC has instituted legal proceedings in the Federal Court against Grays eCommerce Group Limited, an Australia-wide online auction business, over false or misleading descriptions of hundreds of cars on its site, including about the make, model, features or undisclosed obvious faults with the cars.
