The ACCC’s role in energy covers market inquiries in relation to the electricity and gas sectors. The ACCC also enforces the Competition and Consumer (Industry Code – Electricity Retail) Regulations 2019 and Part XICA of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010, which prohibits misconduct in the electricity market. In addition, the ACCC is also working on a Consumer Data Right in relation to energy.

On 19 April 2017, the Australian Government directed the ACCC to conduct a wide-ranging inquiry into the supply of and demand for natural gas in Australia, as well as to publish regular information on the supply and pricing of gas for the next three years.

Electricity market monitoring 2018-2025 Inquiry Ongoing

On 20 August 2018, the Treasurer directed the ACCC to hold a public inquiry that will monitor the prices, profits and margins in the supply of electricity in the National Electricity Market. The inquiry will provide its first report by 31 March 2019 and at least every six months thereafter until the conclusion of the inquiry on 31 August 2025.

Retail electricity pricing inquiry 2017-2018 Inquiry Finalised
Final report published

On 27 March 2017, the Treasurer directed the ACCC to hold an inquiry into the supply of retail electricity and the competitiveness of retail electricity prices.

East Coast Gas Inquiry 2015 Inquiry Finalised

On 13 April 2015 the Minister for Small Business directed the ACCC to hold an inquiry into the competitiveness of the wholesale gas industry.
