On 8 August 2019, the ACCC was directed to conduct an inquiry into markets for tradeable water rights in the Murray–Darling Basin. This final report for the inquiry draws on:

  • the views of a broad range of stakeholders with interests in the use and trade of water in the Basin
  • analysis of wide-ranging water market data from 2012 onwards
  • other information and documents gathered from various large water users, investors, market intermediaries and government entities.

The report makes recommendations to enhance markets for tradeable water rights, including their operation, transparency, regulation, competitiveness and efficiency.

Correction

The final report was re-published on 10 May 2021 to correct footnotes that misattributed stakeholder views. The electronic version available for download has been amended, however the errors appear in the version downloaded before 10 May 2021.
