Slam a Scam is the message for Internet consumers from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Anyone who finds an Internet site they think could be a scam is urged to visit the ACCCs site at http://www.accc.gov.au to register the suspect site on our International Sweep Day site, Acting ACCC Chairman, Mr Allan Asher, said today.

The site will take the visitor to a registration site so they can slam a scam. The ACCC will follow up the site to decide if it is illegal and take action.

And the site offers information on what makes up a scam and the consequences of getting involved in one.

The ACCC, and the 30 or so international agencies it is working with today to sweep the Internet for scams, want to stop fraud on the Internet before it becomes rife.

Already the ACCC has identified hundreds of sites in the first few hours of the Sweep. And late yesterday we were advised of a further four European agencies and 25 State/Federal agencies in the United States joining the Sweep.

Scams cost consumers millions of dollars already up to ten per cent of sites on the Internet are doubtful.

Consumers are urged to be proactive and hit us with sites they think contravene the law. We will follow them up and the Internet will become much safer for all.
