A second group of sunglasses are being recalled from sale following an agreement between a Sydney-based sunglasses distributor, Genop Pty. Limited, and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

The company has agreed to voluntarily undertake a consumer product safety recall for the following sunglasses:-

  • Dakota Smith Sunglass Model 1352 Dust Storm (all colours);
  • Dakota Smith Sunglass Model 1353 Flash (all colours); and
  • Adidas Sunglass A325 Sugar (all colours).

These sunglasses do not comply with the mandatory product standard for sunglasses, Australian Standard AS1067.1-1990, ACCC Chairman, Professor Allan Fels, said today. These sunglasses have refractive and/or prismatic values greater than is allowed under the Standard.

This means a wearer could have blurred vision, misjudge depth and/or position of objects.

Genop Pty. Limited, which distributed the sunglasses nationally to various retailers from 16 July 1997 to 29 September 1997, found through independent testing that the sunglasses did not meet the Standard.

When the ACCC contacted the company over its own concerns, the company had already set in train a recall of the sunglasses from its supplier customers.

Genop responded quickly and cooperatively when requested by the ACCC to publish a consumer product safety recall in respect of the sunglasses to ensure that further risk to consumers was reduced, Professor Fels said.

Genop has offered consumers either a refund or replacement sunglasses with a pair that meet the Standard.
