Petrol price movements on 1 July
"Major capital city petrol prices have, on average, fallen from yesterday's prices. Sydney's unleaded petrol prices increased by 0.2 cents per litre; Melbourne declined by 0.4 cents per litre; Brisbane declined by 0.3 cents per litre; Adelaide increased by 0.2 cents per litre; Perth declined by 0.9 cents per litre. The smaller capital cities experienced increases of 0.8 cents per litre in Hobart; 0.5 cents per litre in Darwin and 1.6 cents per litre in Canberra. "The changes follow a rise in petrol prices over 27-28 June, following the withdrawal of discounts to dealers by the oil companies. There was some rise in international oil prices also over this period. In rural and regional Australia the picture is mixed with some regional centres experiencing increases over the week of over one cent per litre and in a few cases over two cents per litre.
Today the ACCC collected prices for unleaded petrol, diesel and auto LPG from approximately 4000 service stations from around Australia. Around 2500 of these sites were located in the five largest capital cities. About 1400 of these service stations were in 150 country towns in all States and Territories. Altogether these towns accounted for around 70 per cent of the rural population in Australia.
LPG
GST now applies to LPG. Metropolitan LPG prices have risen on average by 2.8 per cent, or 1.2c per litre, overnight. In Sydney there is a larger than average price increase of 5.0 per cent, or 2.2c per litre. This is on top of earlier increases over the past few days. Prices in rural and regional Australia have varied and will continue to be monitored closely by the ACCC.
Diesel
There have been few changes in the price of diesel. Overall it has remained generally stable. Tables showing movements in average prices between 30 June and 1 July for unleaded petrol, LPG and diesel.
