FairStore, a best practice guide for businesses servicing Indigenous communities in rural and remote areas of Australia has been issued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

"The guide has been developed in consultation with other Commonwealth and State/Territory consumer agencies as part of the National Indigenous Consumer Strategy", ACCC Chairman, Mr Graeme Samuel, said today.

"It will help businesses and their staff comply with fair trading laws, warranties and refunds and the provision of store credit or 'book-up'.

"Through developing understanding and respect between store owners, operators and staff and the Indigenous communities the guide seeks to encourage businesses to develop and improve trading standards".

The guideline, replaces Storecharter.  It is available free through the Infocentre, on 1300 302 502, or via the ACCC website.

Stores using store credit or 'book-up' should refer to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission's publication, Dealing with book-up: a guide, available on the ASIC website at www.asic.gov.au.
