The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is surveying Victorian LPG auto prices.

'This is in response to a request from the Victorian government to do so,' ACCC Chairman, Professor Allan Fels, confirmed today.

An ACCC survey on Tuesday 29 September of 81 sites across the Melbourne metropolitan area showed an average price of 29.9 cents per litre with a high of 32.9cpl and a low of 28.3cpl.

A fuller survey conducted by industry sources also reached a similar average (of 30.0cpl).

'LPG prices in Melbourne normally move in cyclical manner. Since the gas crisis prices have moved to slightly above the previous peak in September of 27.5cpl.

'The ACCC is also monitoring LPG prices in rural Victoria with the assistance of the RACV.

'The ACCC has established a freecall prices hotline 1300 360 272 for consumers who wish to notify LPG prices that they consider excessive.

'Concerns about prices of other goods and services can also be advised to this hotline.'

Victoria's Fuel Prices Regulation Act 1981 enables the Victorian government to set maximum retail (and wholesale) prices for fuels including LPG.

'The ACCC would consider recommending the introduction of such controls if LPG prices got out of hand during the crisis', he said.
