The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission confirmed today that it will not oppose the proposed acquisition of water treatment technology company Memtec Limited by United States Filter Corporation.

The ACCC received detailed submissions from both parties and made extensive market inquiries to determine the views of other participants in the water treatment industry.

After inquiries, the ACCC has decided not to intervene in the matter.

The ACCC considers that there is a sufficient threat of potential entry in the areas in which the parties compete to inhibit the exercise of market power by the merged firm, Acting ACCC Chairman, Mr Allan Asher, said today.

Hence the acquisition is unlikely to substantially lessen competition.
