The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will not oppose Austar's proposed acquisition of 10 spectrum licences from TARBS.

The licences apply to the 2.3-2.4 GHz band. This band is suitable for high speed broadband data, video (including interactive television) and voice telephony.

The licences will provide Austar with up to 98 MHz of bandwidth in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Canberra.

"Austar's acquisition allows it to compete in metropolitan areas for the provision of broadband wireless access services", ACCC Chairman, Professor Allan Fels, said today.

"In light of this new entry, the ACCC decided that the acquisition was unlikely to result in a substantial lessening of competition".
