The ACCC will not intervene in the proposed merger between Hewlett-Packard and Compaq, ACCC Chairman, Professor Fels announced today.
Hewlett-Packard is a global provider of computer and imaging products and services and operates in more than 120 countries. Compaq is also a global provider of computing products and services operating in more than 200 countries worldwide.
In Australia, Hewlett-Packard and Compaq compete in the supply of personal computers, personal digital assistants, servers, storage products and IT services.
Professor Fels said that the ACCC’s investigation concluded that the proposed merger would not substantially lessen competition in any market.
The ACCC notes that the merged entity will continue to face competition from a number of established suppliers. These include large global suppliers such as IBM, Sun and Dell.
The ACCC also noted that the information technology industry is a very dynamic industry, characterised by technological innovation and convergence, and, in certain sectors, is experiencing rapid growth.
