The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will hold a public inquiry to review the digital data access service (DDAS) and integrated services digital network (ISDN) declarations in regional areas.

The DDAS and ISDN have been used in the past to enable the provision of early internet services to end-users (DDAS) and business services such as video conferencing (ISDN).

A discussion paper was issued today seeking comments on the importance of the services and the extent to which migration away from these legacy technologies has occurred.

The DDAS and ISDN declarations in regional areas are due to expire on 30 June 2009 and the ACCC is required to complete its review on whether the declarations should be extended, revoked, varied, allowed to expire or re-made prior to this date.

To assist its decision, the ACCC is seeking submissions on its discussion paper from stakeholders and interested parties by no later than 5 pm on 15 April 2009. The discussion paper will be available on the ACCC's website.

After consideration of the submissions from interested parties, the ACCC intends to issue a final report by 30 June 2009 setting out the findings.
