Important information relating to COVID-19

Since 25 March 2020 new rules have been in place to provide temporary debt relief for financially distressed individuals and businesses due to the economic impacts of COVID-19 (coronavirus).

If you are in debt, you have a legal responsibility to repay the money you owe. However there are laws in place to protect you from being treated unfairly by debt collectors.

Dealing with debt collectors

If you are dealing with a debt collector, you have protections under Australian Consumer Law. A debt collector must not mislead, harass, coerce or act unconscionably towards you.

Disputing a debt

If you are contacted about a debt you do not owe, or disagree with the amount being claimed, you have a right to dispute it.
