What the ACCC does

  • We can take action against private health insurers for breaking competition and consumer laws.
  • We can take action against general insurers for breaking competition law.
  • We monitor the prices, costs and profits of certain insurance products, before and after the government’s cyclone reinsurance pool was introduced.
  • We prepare a yearly report to the Australian Senate on the health insurance industry.

What the ACCC can't do

  • We can’t take action against general insurers for breaking consumer law. This is the role of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).
  • We don’t resolve individual disputes about insurance.
  • We don’t administer specific insurance laws.
  • We don’t regulate insurance prices.
