The Bannerman Competition Lecture was held on Tuesday 25 February 2020.

The lecture was delivered by Ms Isabelle de Silva, President of the French Competition Authority, and covered the topics:

  • the debate on the effectiveness of competition policy in the face of multiple challenges, in connection with the digitisation of the economy and international trade issues, emphasising the need to better underline the benefits of competition rules for consumers, their relevance in the digital economy, and how they do not impede the growth of so-called national/Europeans 'champions'
  • the debate on the objectives to be pursued by competition law, and whether there should be a broader view taken as to the objectives
  • the debate on the necessity of shaking up the regulation framework – do the current challenges call for a revised policy mix and the new ex ante evaluation of regulation?
