Petrol, diesel and automotive LPG prices are not regulated in Australia. Automotive LPG prices were deregulated in 1991, and petrol and diesel prices were deregulated in 1998.

However, in the interests of consumers and competitive markets, the ACCC continues to monitor fuel prices.

The ACCC has a Ministerial Direction to monitor prices, costs and profits relating to the supply of petroleum products in Australia for three years, commencing on 19 December 2019. Under the direction the ACCC prepares quarterly petrol monitoring reports focusing on price movements in the capital cities and over 190 regional locations across Australia. It also prepares reports on particular issues of consumer interest.
