Acquirer(s)

  • Woolworths Limited

Target(s)

  • liquor licence in Macquarie Fields NSW

Summary

Woolworths proposed to acquire a takeaway packaged liquor licence located in Macquarie Fields, New South Wales. The Licence was owned by Athlone Pty Ltd and was known as Glenquarie Liquor Shoppe.

Market definition

The ACCC considered that there were two relevant markets:
- the retail market for takeaway packaged liquor in Macquarie Fields and surrounding areas, and
- the New South Wales wholesale market for the supply of liquor for sale in the retail market for takeaway packaged liquor.

Competition analysis

The ACCC considered that the proposed acquisition was unlikely to result in a substantial lessening of competition in any relevant market. The ACCC concluded that the merged entity was likely to be constrained by the remaining competitors in the retail market for takeaway packaged liquor in Macquarie Fields, Ingleburn and surrounding areas. In relation to the wholesale market, the ACCC considered that the increase in the volume of Woolworths Limited's liquor purchases was unlikely to be significant enough to lead to a substantial lessening of competition.
