Summary
The AMA's authorisation covers general practitioners engaging in intra-practice price setting; collective bargaining by single practices in relation to engagement of Visiting Medical Officers to public hospitals; and collective bargaining by single practices in relation to the provision of services to Medicare Locals. The AMA has sought a minor variation so that single practices can collectively bargain with 'Primary Health Networks' instead of 'Medicare Locals.' Medicare Locals were localised health care entities designed to coordinate primary health care delivery. There were 61 Medicare Locals around Australia. In mid 2015, following a Department of Health review, these Medicare Locals were replaced by 31 Primary Health Networks which are now responsible for planning and funding of primary health services in their communities.
On 8 April 2016 the ACCC issued a determination varying the authorisation.
