Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairman Graeme Samuel today paid tribute to former ACCC Commissioner, John Martin, who died last weekend.

"I knew John for more than 20 years, both at the ACCC and in his previous position with the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry," Mr Samuel said. "He was a great friend and a loyal Commissioner."

"He served the ACCC for two terms over ten years, making an outstanding contribution to all facets of the ACCC.  He was committed to the ACCC's work, applying commonsense and experience to decisions.

"John was appointed in June 1999 as Commissioner with special responsibilities for small business, a sector for which he was always a strong but balanced advocate.

"He worked tirelessly with the small business/franchising sectors and on behalf of the ACCC built strong relationships with them.  He played a major role in engaging the ACCC with small business through our extensive outreach and education program.

"John steered the development of three ACCC consultative committees which work with small business, franchising and the health services, as well as valuable work with the professions.

"He was also a major contributor to two landmark reports into the price of unleaded petrol and also the competitiveness of retail prices for standard groceries.

"He led the ACCC's Energy Committee with enthusiasm and commitment and was an active contributor to its enforcement, communications and adjudication activities."

Mr Samuel extended the ACCC's condolences to Mr Martin's family and friends.

The funeral for Mr Martin was held in Canberra today.
