A British-based mail order scam which collected its proceeds using a Hobart post office box is the subject of an interim restraining order obtained yesterday by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission*.

Acting on a flood of complaints from consumers Australia-wide, the ACCC moved against the scheme which promises well-known European, high quality electrical goods for as little as $39.95.

The goods supposedly on offer from the European Appliance Factory Outlet include a Miele dishwasher, a La Cuisine food processor, a Sony stereo/CD component centre, a Grillmaster barbecue and a Sharp microwave oven. EAFO is based in London.

Consumers were enticed to send their money to a Hobart post office box, EAFO, and in return they expected to possibly receive the dishwasher or another high-priced good. Instead they would have received the food processor and the barbecue which have an estimated value of between $10 and $15.

In the Federal Court, Melbourne, the ACCC sought a interim injunction to restrain the company's local agents Garmer Ltd from promoting and dealing in any mail order which they receive. The agent's bank account has also been frozen. Similar orders were given against Garmer's general manager Ian McKay. Garmer Ltd is a registered foreign company, based in Hong Kong.

Further hearings are scheduled for December 1 in Melbourne before Justice Northrop.
