Terms of reference19 Apr 2017

On 19 April 2017, the Australian Government directed the ACCC to conduct a wide-ranging inquiry into the supply of and demand for natural gas in Australia, and to publish regular information on the supply and pricing of gas for the next 3 years. The Terms of Reference for the inquiry were set by the then Treasurer, the Hon Scott Morrison MP.

On 25 July 2019, the then Treasurer the Hon Josh Frydenberg MP wrote to the ACCC extending the ACCC’s inquiry into the gas market until December 2025.

On 17 February 2022, the then Assistant Treasurer the Hon Michael Sukkar MP wrote to the ACCC requesting that the ACCC examine the tender process conducted by Incitec Pivot Limited prior to the closure of its Gibson Island plant. This request was consistent with the terms of reference which established the Gas Inquiry 2017-2025.

On 28 August 2025, the Treasurer the Hon Dr Jim Chalmers provided the ACCC a new Direction to formally extend the inquiry to 2030.
