On 10 February 2020 the Australian Government directed the ACCC to conduct an inquiry into markets for the supply of digital platform services.

Digital platform services covered by this direction included:

  • internet search engine services
  • social media services
  • online private messaging services
  • digital content aggregation platform services
  • media referral services
  • electronic marketplace services.

The direction also covered:

  • digital platform service providers' digital advertising services
  • the data practices of data brokers.

The ACCC provided the government with the first interim report on 30 September 2020. Further interim reports were delivered every 6 months.

On 23 June 2025, the ACCC published the final report of the Digital Platform Services Inquiry.
