In 2018–19 the ACCC’s Agriculture Unit conducted a market study of the wine grape industry. The study examined competition, contracting practices, transparency and risk allocation in wine grape supply chains.
The market study was finalised in September 2019. However, the ACCC will review the industry’s progress in adopting the recommendations in its final report in 12 to 18 months.
The ACCC will consider recommending to Government that a mandatory code be introduced if:
- the upcoming review of the Australian Wine Industry Code of Conduct does not address matters raised in the report regarding quality assessments, price transparency, payment terms and dispute resolution
- more winemakers do not sign up to the code, including all large winemakers.
