There are national and local state and territory agencies that can provide you with information about your rights and guide you with enquiries or complaints about disability and health services.

National agencies

National Disability Insurance Agency Provides information, referrals, individual plans and support under the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission

Responsible for registering providers under the National Disability Insurance Scheme and ensuring that supports are high-quality and safe. Monitors compliance with the NDIS practice Standards and NDIS Code of Conduct.
Aged Care Complaints Commissioner Resolves concerns about aged care services funded by the Australian Government, including services provided in the home.
Commonwealth Ombudsman Investigates complaints from people who believe they have been treated unfairly or unreasonably by an Australian Government agency or an organisation contracted to deliver services on behalf of the government.
Australian Competition & Consumer Commission

Provides information about consumer rights.

Accepts complaints about businesses that may have breached the Competition & Consumer Act 2010.

Helps resolve complaints about disability services.

ACT Health Services Commissioner

Helps resolve complaints about health services and health service providers.

New South Wales

NSW Health Care Complaints Commission

Handles complaints about health service providers.

Provides advice on how to resolve any concerns directly with a health service provider without the need to make a formal complaint.

NSW Ombudsman

Helps resolve complaints about disability and community services, and about any supports funded under an NDIS participant's plan.

Northern Territory

Ombudsman NT

Investigates and helps resolve complaints about NT Government agencies, local government councils, and police conduct.

Health & Community Services Complaints Commission

Helps resolve complaints about disability and health services.

Queensland

Office of the Health Ombudsman

Handles complaints about health services and health service providers.

Helps resolve complaints between customers and providers.

South Australia

Disability Advocacy & Complaints Service of South Australia

Provides support, information and advocacy for people with disability, their families, friends and carers.

Health & Community Services Complaints Commissioner Handles complaints about health and community services, including government, community and private services.

Tasmania

Health Complaints Commissioner

Helps resolve complaints about health services and health service providers, including some disability services and disability service providers.

Victoria

Disability Services Commissioner

Provides advice and assistance in the resolution of complaints about disability services.

Office of the Health Services Commissioner

Handles complaints about health services and health service providers.
Mental Health Complaints Commissioner Handles complaints about public mental health services, including designated mental health services, publicly funded mental health support services and NDIS funded mental health community support services.

Western Australia

Health and Disability Services Complaints Office

Offers a free impartial resolution service for complaints relating to health, disability or mental health services in Western Australia and the Indian Ocean Territories.

State and territory consumer protection agencies

Your local consumer protection agency:

  • can provide information about your consumer rights
  • allows you to make a complaint about a business
  • can assist you by identifying the issues in dispute and exploring options to resolve the situation.
