Prices, surcharges & receipts

There are rules about how prices must be displayed. Businesses cannot make misleading price claims, and cannot charge a payment surcharge that is excessive. Make sure you keep a copy of your receipt or some other proof of purchase in case something goes wrong later.

Price displays

There are laws about the way prices are displayed. Prices should be genuine and you should be able to easily see the total price of anything advertised. If multiple different prices are displayed on a product or in advertising, the business has to fix the display or sell you the item for the lowest price.

Receipts

It is always a good idea to get a receipt or other proof of purchase for products and services you buy. Keep all records just in case something goes wrong later.

Credit, debit & prepaid card surcharges

A new ban stops businesses from charging payment surcharges on credit, debit and prepaid card payments that are excessive. The ACCC will investigate consumer complaints and take enforcement action where necessary.
