Internet Activity record keeping rule 201811 Dec 2018
On 11 December 2018, the ACCC released the Internet Activity record keeping rule to allow for the collection of internet activity information from service providers on a biannual basis.
The ACCC is implementing a two-tier approach to transition from the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Internet Activity Survey (IAS) to the record keeping rule.
The first tier only applies to the December 2018 reporting period, which involves collecting similar data to the IAS. The collected data includes wired broadband, wireless broadband and mobile handset services information regarding retail services in operation (SIOs) and volume of data downloaded by access technology and estimated download speeds.
The second tier applies from the June 2019 reporting period onwards and provides a greater level of disaggregation of SIOs information for NBN, non-NBN fixed and mobile services as well as data volumes by download speed tiers and access technology.
The timeline for the 2 reporting periods is summarised in the table.
Reference date | Reporting period | Submission date | Results published |
---|---|---|---|
31 December | 1 October to 31 December | 28 February | End of April/early May |
30 June | 1 April to 30 June | 31 August | End of October/early November |
The current carriage service providers required to report include Aussie Broadband, Australian Private Networks, Dodo, Harbour ISP, iiNet, IPStar Australia, MyRepublic, Primus, Singtel Optus, SkyMesh, Telstra, TPG and Vodafone Hutchison Australia.
