The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) is responsible for managing spectrum under the Radiocommunications Act 1992.

Prior to 17 June 2021, the ACMA could only impose allocation limits on the amount of spectrum that a person can use under allocated licences if directed by the Minister for Communications to do so. The Minister sought the ACCC's advice about the allocation limits that may be appropriate in making these directions to the ACMA.

Since 17 June 2021, the ACMA has the power to impose allocation limits without direction from the Minister, but is required to consult the ACCC in doing so.
