About digital identity

To access some services or products, you have to first verify your identity. This lets the service or product provider know you are who you say you are. Setting up a Digital ID allows you to verify your identity online, without having to provide extra personal information.

The Australian Government has passed legislation for secure, convenient, voluntary and inclusive ways to verify your identity online. The Digital ID Act 2024 and the Digital ID (Transitional and Consequential Provisions) Bill 2024 will begin by 1 December 2024.

The Digital ID System is a key part of Australia’s broader digital transformation. The system will help strengthen Australia’s growing digital economy in 2 key ways.

  1. The Digital ID System will develop secure, convenient, voluntary and inclusive methods of verifying identity in online transactions for both the public and private sector. The Digital ID System will protect the privacy and security of personal information.
  2. The Digital ID System will help build trust in digital identity services. The system will help streamline online services, and support further development of the digital sector.
