What the ACCC does

What the ACCC can't do

  • We don’t help consumers setup or use a Digital ID. Consumers should contact their service provider for assistance.
  • We don’t offer information about using the Australian Government’s Digital ID app. Consumers can find that information on the myID website.

About Australia’s Digital ID System

Australia's Digital ID System is a key part of the nation's broader digital transformation. The Australian Government expects the Digital ID system will help strengthen Australia’s growing digital economy in 2 key ways.

  1. Providing secure, convenient, voluntary and inclusive methods of verifying identity in online transactions for both the public and private sector. The system will protect the privacy and security of your personal information.
  2. Helping build trust in digital ID services. The system will help streamline online services, and support further development of the digital sector.

Information about Digital IDs for consumers

A Digital ID is an online method of confirming your identity. Creating and using a Digital ID is voluntary.

You can find information on what a Digital ID is and how it works on the Digital ID System website.

Benefits of using a Digital ID

To access some services or products, you must first verify your identity. This lets the service or product provider know you are who you say you are.

Setting up a Digital ID through an accredited provider allows you to verify your identity with connected organisations. This reduces the need to repeatedly share copies of your identity documents with different organisations.

Choosing a Digital ID provider

There are multiple providers offering a Digital ID service in Australia. Different providers give access to different services. Depending on your needs you may choose to create a Digital ID with one or more service providers.

You can find information on the Digital ID System website about:

If you need help setting up or using a Digital ID contact your Digital ID service provider.

If you are looking to access a service provided by the Australian Government, you will need to use a provider who is a part of the Australian Government Digital ID System.

Other roles in Digital ID

The Office of the System Administrator oversees operational aspects of the AGDIS including managing applicant testing and onboarding organisations that have been approved to participate.

Working together

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, the System Administrator and the ACCC has been put in place for Australia’s Digital ID System.
