A Digital ID is an online method of confirming your identity. Creating and using a Digital ID is voluntary.

Benefits of using a Digital ID
To access some services or products, you must first verify your identity. This lets the service or product provider know you are who you say you are.
Setting up a Digital ID through an accredited provider allows you to verify your identity with connected organisations. This reduces the need to repeatedly share copies of your identity documents with different organisations.
Choosing a Digital ID provider
There are multiple providers offering a Digital ID service in Australia. Different providers give access to different services. Depending on your needs you may choose to create a Digital ID with one or more service providers.

If you are looking to access a service provided by the Australian Government, you will need to use a provider who is a part of the Australian Government Digital ID System.
The Office of the System Administrator oversees operational aspects of the AGDIS including managing applicant testing and onboarding organisations that have been approved to participate.
The Digital ID Data Standards Chair is responsible for implementation and operation of data standards for Australia’s Digital ID System.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, the System Administrator and the ACCC has been put in place for Australia’s Digital ID System.
The MoU supports the parties to carry out their independent Digital ID functions by facilitating cooperation, consultation and legally permitted information sharing between the parties.
