The information statement is a document that franchisors must give to prospective franchisees. It explains what franchising is and the risks of owning a franchise.
When franchisors must give the information statement
Under the Franchising Code of Conduct, franchisors must give the information statement when someone shows interest in buying a franchise.
This must be done:
- as soon as possible, and no later than 7 days after the prospective franchisee shows interest
- before giving any other document about the franchise.
What is in the information statement
The information statement is a guide to franchising for prospective franchisees.
It includes:
- information on franchising, including the risks
- research and tasks for understanding franchising
- questions to ask before entering a franchise agreement.
