There are no laws or rules specifically regulating content, tweets or posts on social media. However, the ACL, which prohibits businesses from making false, misleading or deceptive claims about products or services or other businesses, applies to social media in the same way that it applies to all other marketing and promotional activities. Businesses should keep in mind that social media operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and many consumers use social media outside normal business hours.

In addition to posting content that is clear, truthful and accurate, it is important that businesses monitor their social media sites regularly to ensure content posted by customers, fans and followers is not false, misleading or deceptive.
