On 14 February 2023, the Treasurer directed the ACCC to conduct an inquiry into the market for retail deposit products supplied by authorised deposit-taking institutions. It includes how banks set interest rates, as well as other terms and conditions.

Childcare inquiry Childcare Inquiry Ongoing

On 28 October 2022, the Treasurer directed the ACCC to conduct an inquiry into the market for the supply of childcare services. The inquiry is to commence by 1 January 2023 and provide an interim report by no later than 30 June 2023, and a final report by 31 December 2023.

Gas inquiry 2017-30 Energy Inquiry Ongoing

On 19 April 2017, the Australian Government directed the ACCC to conduct a wide-ranging inquiry into the supply of and demand for natural gas in Australia, and to publish regular information on the supply and pricing of gas for the next 3 years. On 25 July 2019, the Treasurer wrote to the ACCC extending the inquiry until December 2025.

Electricity market monitoring inquiry 2018-25 Energy Inquiry Ongoing

On 20 August 2018, the Treasurer directed the ACCC to hold a public inquiry into the prices, profits and margins in the supply of electricity in the national electricity market. The terms of reference required a first report by 31 March 2019 and then every 6 months until the end of the inquiry on 31 August 2025.

On 31 March 2022, the Australian Government announced that it had directed the ACCC to conduct an inquiry into towers used in the supply of mobile telecommunications and other radiocommunications services in regional areas, and into the feasibility of providing mobile roaming during natural disasters or other emergencies.

Consumer data right (CDR) Multiple Focus area Ongoing

On 26 November 2017, the Australian Government introduced Consumer Data Right (CDR) in Australia. CDR will give consumers greater access to and control over their data and will improve consumers’ ability to compare and switch between products and services. It will encourage competition between service providers, leading not only to better prices for customers but also more innovative products and services.
