Ms Valerie McKay has won the Annual Australian Competition and Consumer Commission prize for an economics/law thesis on competition policy.

Ms McKay was presented with her award in Canberra today by the ACCC Chairman, Professor Allan Fels.

The award, worth $1,000, was given for Ms McKay's thesis Australian Telecommunications, Regulating Access to Essential Facilities: Part XIC or Part IIIA? Ms McKay completed her studies in Economics/Law at the Australian National University last year, undertaking honours in the law component.

The subject matter of Ms McKay's thesis is important to the role of the ACCC because it provides a coherent examination of the telecommunications specific legislation in Part XIC, comparing it with Part IIIA of the Trade Practices Act 1974.

"The ACCC is pleased to make this annual award," Professor Fels said.

"To be eligible for consideration, the thesis submitted must cover an aspect of competition policy in economics and/or law and have been submitted for an honours or higher degree at an Australian tertiary institution.

"The panel judging the award were impressed by the high standard of work submitted, and look forward to this standard being maintained - or even surpassed."

A call for entries for the Year 2000 prize has been circulated.
