Petrol prices
Petrol prices in the major capital cities fell, on average, today following a similar fall on Saturday 1 July.
In Melbourne the average price of unleaded petrol fell by 1 cent per litre from Saturday’s price to 86.4 cents per litre today, a drop of 1.7 cents since Friday. In Sydney, prices, on average, fell by 0.6 cents per litre from Saturday to 88.8 cents per litre today, a drop of 0.7 cents since Friday. The smaller capital cities, with the exception of Hobart, experienced decreases in prices on average.
As previously noted by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, these price changes follow a rise in prices over 27-28 June, reflecting removal of discounts by the oil companies and some rise in international prices. World oil and petrol prices have risen over the past two weeks and are impacting on local prices.
On average petrol prices in Hobart increased by 2.5 cents per litre since the week prior to 1 July to around 95.9 cents per litre on Saturday but had dropped by 2.5 cents per litre today. There is a wide variation in petrol prices within Hobart and across Tasmanian towns. Tasmanian petrol prices have been affected by the above influences and by the Tasmanian Government’s removal of a fuel subsidy of 1.95 cents per litre on motor spirit and 1.99 cents per litre on diesel on 1 July.
The average increase in unleaded petrol prices on 1 July in non-metropolitan areas varied across states from a 0.14 cents per litre in Queensland to 0.96 cents per litre in Victoria and 1.46 cents per litre in Tasmania.
LPG prices
The Goods and Services Tax now applies to LPG. In the major capital cities, other than Melbourne, the price of LPG has increased slightly on average today following rises that occurred on Saturday. In Melbourne, the average price of LPG decreased by 0.3% on Saturday and by a further 2.6% on average today, a combined drop of 2.85% since 30 June.
Average price increases for LPG in non-metropolitan areas on 1 July varied from 4.5% in the Northern Territory to 7.2% in Victoria since the week proceeding 1 July. The ACCC is continuing to receive data on LPG prices in non-metropolitan areas.
