The ACCC inquiry into petrol prices will hold a public hearing in Albury/Wodonga tomorrow (Tuesday, 7 May).

The Commission will hear evidence from both sides of the border. Witnesses appearing before the inquiry include the Victorian and NSW farmers' federations, the Service Station Association of NSW, a former MP involved in the Victorian parliamentary inquiry into petrol prices, and the person who monitors pump prices in Wagga Wagga.

The inquiry is reviewing the present method of regulating wholesale petrol prices throughout Australia. It is also examining the disparity between city and country prices and has been asked to recommend any measures that might sharpen competition in rural markets. The ACCC is scheduled to submit its report to the Commonwealth Government by July 31.

The Commission is keen to collect evidence about the extent of competition in the Albury/Wodonga region. The 1.5c per litre difference in the NSW and Victorian taxes on petrol is not reflected in pump prices in the border region and the Commission is particularly interested in the prices charged by the big-volume sites on the Albury side of the river.
