BP Australia Pty Ltd has altered signage about its new petrol discount offer after concerns consumers may have been confused about the offer's nature.

"BP recently joined the competitive discount petrol market with a 5% Off Petrol and 5% Off Everything offer to consumers who obtain a BP Citibank Mastercard", Australian Competition and Consumer Commission Chairman, Mr Graeme Samuel, said today.

"As part of the promotion BP used signage above some roadside petrol price displays at service stations. Its signage contained large lettering noting the 5% Off Petrol and 5% Off Everything offer.

"It also indicated at the foot of the signage that conditions applied. These included that consumers must obtain a BP Citibank Mastercard before being entitled to the 5% discount.

"The ACCC raised concerns with BP about the small size of the print that referred consumers to the terms and conditions.

"BP has responded promptly and has adopted larger font in its advertisement to ensure that consumers are not confused

"BP's revised advertisement will be installed at relevant sites by 19 September 2006.

"Consumers will be keen to obtain the benefit of the additional competition added to the discount fuel market by BP", Mr Samuel said. "But, as with any trader, it is imperative that if conditions apply, this must be clearly conveyed.

"Such conditions must be of sufficient prominence in the advertisement to ensure that the advertisement is not misleading".
