The Law Society of South Australia was established as a voluntary professional association for members of the legal profession in 1879. Its principal mission is to represent its members and the legal profession in general. Description
The Law Society of Tasmania has two major functions. The first is that of regulator of the legal profession of the State of Tasmania. The second is to provide services to its members to assist in maintaining high standards of practice in the Tasmanian legal profession. The main service to the public is to regulate the many activities of lawyers, by providing prudential supervision and services to investigate and prosecute complaints against lawyers.
The services offered to Members of the Law Society of Tasmania are designed to assist the provision of timely and effective delivery of legal services. Hence, the Society has focussed on areas such as education, indemnity insurance and risk management. The Society also provides a counselling service to members and a range of other personal and practice related benefits. It accepts and investigates complaints regarding legal practitioners. It can put complaints of substance before a panel to decide on appropriate action/sanction.

Law Society of the Northern Territory
Description
The Law Society Northern Territory was formed on 7 May 1968. It is now a statutory body constituted under the Legal Practitioners Act (NT) that controls the affairs of the legal profession in the Northern Territory. The Law Society offers a range of services to both members and to the community and is the only body in the NT that is able to issue practising certificates to lawyers. The Society regulates conduct rules between lawyers and deals with complaints against lawyers. The Legal Practitioners Act (NT) provides for the Society to be the first tier of a three tiered system of regulation of the legal profession comprising the Law Society, the Legal Practitioners’ Complaints Committee and the Supreme Court. The Society will assess and/or investigate complaints and refer serious matters to the Legal Practitioners’ Complaints Committee.
