The Australian Energy Regulator(AER) is a part of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and is currently responsible for regulating wholesale electricity and natural gas markets. From 1 July 2012, the AER will assume responsibility for overseeing retail electricity and natural gas markets.
The ACCC and AER have entered into memoranda of understanding to promote effective communication, cooperation and co-ordination between the AER, ACCC and recognised energy industry ombudsman in the performance of their different roles in the energy industry. The memoranda of understanding will also support closer working relationships between the agencies in relation to issues arising under the ACL, as these arrangements aim to enhance the understanding of consumer protection issues in relation to the national energy market, and the performance by the ombudsman schemes, the ACCC, and the AER of their respective roles.
