National Measurement Institute - Trade Measurement
Description
The National Measurement Institute (NMI), a division of the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, is Australia’s peak measurement body, maintaining primary standards of measurement and providing the legal and technical framework for the dissemination of measurement standards. From 1 July 2010, its role will expand and it will be responsible for the regulation of a new national trade measurement system, transitioning from the current system administered by the states and territories.
Trade measurement is an important aspect of economic infrastructure and has a critical role in ensuring all transactions where the value of a good is determined by measurement are fair to all. Trade measurement involves around $400bn worth of trade each year in Australia, and consumers and business alike expect measurements of goods that are sold on the basis of length, weight and volume to be accurate. This important reform of the trade measurement system confirms the Commonwealth’s commitment to a single national system which will maintain a national and international reputation for equitable trading.
