During August, the ACCC released four SCAMwatch radar alerts, warning consumers about newly emerging scams. The subjects of those alerts were:
a Unicef fake job offer and investment grants scam
the Grand Sands Casino scam, which was an SMS scam promising fake prizes
a 'beat the recession' chain letter scam
a door-to-door scam by people claiming to be consultants from the Australian Taxation Office.
Each SCAMwatch alert also provides tips on how consumers can protect themselves against scams.
Retirement accommodation information
A new page was also added to the ACCC website, containing information on retirement accommodation and things to consider when making arrangements for accommodation after retirement. The page also contains the details of other agencies that can provide further information on this topic.
Melbourne Franchising and Business Opportunities Expo
Also during August, the ACCC and the Office of the Victorian Small Business Commissioner held a joint stand at the Melbourne Franchising and Business Opportunities Expo. The stand provided the ACCC with the opportunity to speak to prospective franchisees and franchisors about the rights and obligations contained in the Franchising Code of Conduct. ACCC staff also gave presentations at seminars held during the expo.
