The ACCC considered the joint venture in the context of the market for the transportation of freight between Melbourne and the northern ports of Tasmania (trans Bass Strait market).
Competition analysis
The ACCC formed the view that the joint venture was unlikely to substantially lessen competition in the relevant market. In reaching this view, the ACCC noted that the joint venture parties are likely to be competitively constrained by the two existing competitors - Searoad and TT Line. In addition, the ACCC considered that ANL is not likely to continue to be a vigorous and effective competitor in the absence of the joint venture.
