Prevention is better than cure: Competing Fairly Forum
Prevention is better than cure is the theme of Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s fourth Competing Fairly Forum to be broadcast via satellite to more than 110 towns around rural and regional Australia on Tuesday 21 May.
"It’s good business practice for small business operators to know what protection is available to them under the Trade Practices Act 1974 and how to manage any conflict that may arise", ACCC Chairman, Professor Allan Fels, said. "Business operators should also be aware of their responsibilities to other businesses and consumers.
"The May 21 Forum will discuss how complying with the Act can be a simple task for small businesses, no matter where they are located. The Forum will also look at issues that may arise from business relationships. Issues will include the supply relationships involving primary producers. The panel discussion and scenarios will give small business owners practical guidelines on how to avoid disputes and resolve conflicts with other businesses and their customers whilst educating them about their ultimate legal rights, as well as obligations, under the Act.
"Presenter, George Negus, will again act as host and will introduce the Forum panel that includes Professor Fels. The panel will also include experts in trade practices, leasing and alternative dispute resolution. During the broadcast, the panel will answer questions submitted from across Australia via the Forum website, mail and phone. Questions will also be taken during the broadcast and those not answered on the night will receive a written reply".
The May Forum follows the successful October 2001 Forum when business operators, farmers, community leaders and consumers took part in an hour-long session on advertising and selling. Through panel discussion, video presentations and direct questions, participants were given the opportunity to learn about how the Trade Practices Act gives protection against misleading advertising.
The Competing Fairly Forums are an integral part of the ACCC's Rural and Regional Program. They aim to better inform regional communities about their rights and obligations under the Act. A better informed community is one that will alert the ACCC to anti-competitive and dishonest practices.
