Cartels, consumers and the role of the regulator - proposed changes to the Trade Practices Act

12th March 2009

Conference

Competition and Trade Practices Summit, Sydney

Summary

There are two proposed changes to the Trade Practices Act which will bolster the ACCC's role as competition regulator and consumer watchdog. The criminalisation of cartel conduct will protect the fair and competitive conditions of the Australian marketplace; while the Australian Consumer Law reforms will provide a national consumer law to protect consumers and businesses as well as reduce compliance costs and provide greater consistency.
