Global financial crisis—another excuse for a scam!

This SCAMwatch alert was issued in January 2009.

SCAMwatch warned consumers to be on the lookout for scammers who might seek to exploit the global financial crisis by luring them into providing private financial details, financial payments or to accept bogus employment opportunities.

This alert provided warning signs for specific types of scams such as phishing and employment scams that attempt to take advantage of the current economic climate and consumer vulnerability.

Banking and phishing scams try and trick consumers into giving out personal information to commit identity theft or steal money. Employment scams involve the placement of job advertisements on employment websites or classifieds in an attempt to lure consumers into undertaking potentially unlawful activities such as money laundering.

Warning signs to assist consumers to identify phishing and employment scams and tips to help consumers protect themselves from these scams were also provided.  More information is available on the SCAMwatch website.
