Consumers and Small Business: At the very heart of the Trade Practices Act

26th November 2008

Conference

Australia and New Zealand School of Government (ANZOG) Public Lecture, Australian National University, Canberra

Summary

The role of the ACCC and the Trade Practices Act is fundamentally to enhance the interests of Australian consumers by promoting fair, vigorous and lawful competition. Small business is a vital part of vigorous competition and for the most part, the interests of small business are consistent with those of consumers overall. However it is not the job of the ACCC to preserve competitors or protect any sectors of the economy from lawful competition.
