The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) is an independent organisation offering free and accessible dispute resolution services to the customers of financial services providers (FSP) across Australia. FOS can deal with disputes about the following broad types of product: Credit, insurance, investments, payment systems, traditional trustee services and deposit taking. FOS is funded by its members. Approximately 12,000 FSPs operating within Australia are FOS members.
Customers should raise their complaint with the FSP prior to contacting FOS. If the customer is unhappy with the response received, they can then contact FOS, who will offer conciliation processes or may investigate the dispute and issue a decision that is binding on the FSP.
FOS was formed in 2008 following the merger of the Banking and Financial Services Ombudsman (BFSO), Financial Industry Complaints Service (FICS), Insurance Ombudsman Service (IOS), Insurance Brokers Disputes Limited (IBD) and Credit Union Dispute Resolution Centre (CUDRC).
