Quick carbon tips

Signs that a greenhouse claim is likely to be credible

  • The offset claim is accredited under a credible scheme such as Greenhouse Friendly™ or GreenPower™.
  • The offset meets a recognised standard, such as the GHG Protocol.
  • The business making the claim provides detailed information to back it up, such as specifying whether part or all of the product is offset or carbon neutral.
  • If an offset is promised to happen over time, the business provides detailed information about when it will happen and guarantees to provide other offsets if the project does not reach the promised target.

Signs a claim may not be credible

  • The claim is vague and not backed up with information.
  • The product or service uses an unfamiliar ‘green’ logo that suggests it is accredited by a third party, without providing detailed information to support its use.

Steps to reduce your carbon emissions

  • Measure your emissions—the Australian Government Environment Department’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions Calculator can help you work out how much you produce. View the Departments website.
  • Take steps to reduce your emissions—there are many easy ways to do this at home and at work. Visit the Departments website for more details.
  • Switch to accredited GreenPower™—this is electricity generated from non-fossil fuel sources.
  • Purchase carbon offsets to cover emissions which remain—use the information in Avoiding hot air: a consumer guide to carbon claims to guide you.
