Established as a statutory authority of the Australian Government in 1987, the Institute was initially housed in the then Royal Canberra Hospital on Acton Peninsula. The AIHW can also be traced back to the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine set up by the Australian Government Department of Health at the University of Sydney in 1930. The AIHW are now based in Fern Hill Park, Canberra, and collaborate with a range of experts from around Australia. The Institute is governed by a Board that is accountable to Parliament.
